Plastic Free Swaps for a Nontoxic Home

After watching The Plastic Detox on Netflix, it really puts things into perspective—how much plastic we’re exposed to daily, how it impacts our health, and how it can affect our fertility and generations to come!

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s awareness and making better swaps where it makes sense.

I always tell people: start with the products you use every single day. That’s where your biggest impact is.

Here are my favorite simple, realistic swaps for your kitchen and bathroom 👇

🌿 Kitchen Swaps

Bamboo Dish Scrubber (instead of plastic sponges)

Traditional sponges are one of the worst offenders. hey’re made of plastic, shed microplastics, and hold bacteria like crazy.

A bamboo dish scrubber is:

  • Biodegradable

  • Long-lasting

  • Way more aesthetic on your sink

Once you switch, you truly won’t go back.

Bamboo Pot Scrubber

For tougher messes, this is your upgrade.

Instead of reaching for steel wool or plastic-heavy scrubbers, a bamboo pot scrubber gives you:

  • Strong scrubbing power

  • Zero plastic

  • No rust or weird residue

Dish Block (instead of liquid dish soap in plastic bottles)

A dish block replaces those bulky plastic soap bottles and lasts forever. Just rub your scrubber on the bar and wash like normal. And yes… it really cuts through grease like no other.

Why I love it:

  • No plastic packaging

  • Super concentrated (lasts months)

  • Clean, simple ingredients

Beeswax Wraps (instead of plastic wrap)

This is such an easy, low-effort switch.

Use beeswax wraps to cover:

  • Leftovers

  • Fruit

  • Bowls

They’re reusable, washable, and honestly just make your fridge look cuter.

MK Free Cutting Board

Cutting boards are something people rarely think about…but they should.

Many plastic cutting boards:

  • Harbor bacteria in deep grooves

  • Shed microplastics into your food

A MK Free cutting board is:

  • Non-toxic

  • Durable

  • Designed to be a safer, long-term option

Glass Food Storage Containers

If you only make one swap - make it this one.

Plastic containers can leach chemicals, especially when heated.

Switching to glass food storage:

  • Keeps your food clean and fresh

  • Doesn’t absorb stains or smells

  • Eliminates plastic exposure during reheating

🛁 Bathroom Swaps

Skincare in Glass Bottles

Products like Mad Hippie are leading the way here.

Why it matters:

  • No plastic sitting with your products long-term

  • Cleaner ingredients overall

  • Better for you and the planet

Aluminum Bottles (Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash)

Brands like Plaine Products use aluminum bottles with a cosmetic-grade liner.

What I love:

  • No single-use plastic

  • Still super convenient

  • Very long lasting

Konjac Sponge (instead of plastic loofah)

Plastic loofahs break down and release microplastics every time you use them.

A konjac sponge is:

  • 100% plant-based

  • Gentle on skin

  • Compostable

Cotton Makeup Remover Pads

Instead of disposable wipes or synthetic rounds:

Use reusable cotton pads:

  • Washable

  • Softer on your skin

  • Way less waste

Bar Soap (instead of body wash in plastic bottles)

Brands like Humble Brands make this switch easy.

Bar soap:

  • Eliminates plastic bottles

  • Lasts longer

  • Uses simpler ingredients

Toothpaste in a Metal Tube

David's toothpaste comes in a recyclable metal tube (huge upgrade from plastic).

Plus:

  • Clean ingredients

  • No unnecessary fillers

  • Minimal waste

Bamboo Toothbrush with Castor Oil Bristles

Also from David's

This swap:

  • Replaces plastic handles

  • Uses plant-based bristles

  • Is a simple, everyday upgrade

Mouthwash in Glass

Another win from David's

Instead of plastic bottles:

  • Glass packaging

  • Cleaner formulas

  • Less long-term exposure

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to throw everything out and start over. Use up what you already have and use this as a guide for your next nontoxic and plastic free swap.

I shared the products we use daily and that touch our skin or mouth daily.

Those are your highest-impact swaps.
