Why your hair is shedding more this fall (and why it’s totally normal)
If you’ve noticed more hair in your brush lately, don’t panic - it’s not just you. I’m shedding a lot right now too. Seasonal shedding is completely normal, especially in the fall.
Our hair naturally goes through growth cycles, and around this time of year, more strands enter the “resting” phase before shedding to make way for new growth. Cooler weather, less sunlight, and even changes in hormones can all play a part. So instead of stressing (which can actually make it worse), I like to focus on nourishing my scalp and keeping my hair as strong and healthy as possible.
Here’s what I’m doing right now to support my hair during shedding season:
Leaning into my 5 step haircare routine:
1. Hair Repair Spray before brushing
I always start by spraying Hair Repair on my hair before brushing. It helps reduce breakage and protect against split ends, a must this time of year. I also switched brushes to the Unbrush, the flexible, wider bristles glide through my hair with way less tugging or breakage.
2. Hair Growth Serum & Massage
Next, I apply my hair serum along my hairline and part, then gently massage it in with a scalp massager (or just my fingertips). I let it sit for about 30 minutes, this helps boost circulation and promote healthy growth.
3. Shampoo + Conditioner (Plaine Products)
I use Plaine Products shampoo and conditioner. Aloe is the first ingredient, which helps soothe the scalp, lock in moisture, and balance pH.
Pro tip: Sulfate-free shampoo doesn’t lather the same way, so I put two pumps in my hand and rub them together with a little shower water before applying, it helps the product spread evenly.
4. Conditioner rinse
Before using the conditioner, I wring the ends of my hair out and rub the conditioner in my hair from the ears down. I usually run my fingers through my hair so it’s evenly distributed. I let the conditioner sit while I wash my body, and then rinse it out.
5. Hair Tea Mist
After washing, I spritz Hair Tea through my hair, it’s made with rosemary, peppermint, and clove to help stimulate growth and strengthen strands. It can be used daily on wet or dry hair.
Bonus Tips, but very important:
Never go to bed with wet hair: wet strands are more fragile and prone to breakage (plus it can create scalp buildup or frizz).
If your hair is naturally straight: brush it dry before washing to reduce tangles and breakage in the shower.
Shedding is normal, it’s just your body’s way of resetting. The best thing you can do is treat your hair gently, feed your scalp, and stay consistent. Now, while your hair is shedding it will also become healthier and come back stronger than ever before.
